White House stakeout

The “stakeout” is a staple of White House coverage. Traditionally, folks who meet with the president - and want to talk to the press about it - head to the stakeout position just outside the West WIng.

Here’s a look at what a stakeout looks like from the participants’ point of view. Today’s involved appearances by GOP and Democratic leaders after they met with President Barack Obama.

They all met together in a bipartisan session inside the building. But at stakeout, it was Repubs first and Dems second. The stakeout is not a place for bipartisanship.

Obama rescinds Bush order on presidential records

As expected, President Barack Obama moved quickly to rescind a George W. Bush executive order that gave presidential heirs the right to block release of White House records.

In a Wednesday executive order, Obama revoked a Nov. 1, 2001 Bush executive order that gave ex-presidents and their heirs unprecedented control over the release of White House records.

Obama’s order sets up a new process for handling ex-presidents’ executive privilege claims to block release of records. For living ex-presidents, the order says the nation’s archivist will consult with the attorney general and the counsel to the president. The order gives heirs of dead presidents no right to try to block release of White House records.

Putting the Inauguration in the Rear-view Mirror

I’m back on the Greyhound bus, on our way out of Washington and back to New York.

The driver got everybody’s attention with a crack about how the bus was bound for West Virginia. New Yorkers on the bus, clutching or wearing their Obama beanies, pins and posters, started shouting, “Whoa! Whoa!”

Here’s a photo of the lines from Washington’s bus station, which was running smooth despite being very busy.
