Obama tones down Texas expectations

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama had to correct the audience participation - and tone down hopes of carrying Texas - during his Tuesday speech in Washington to the annual convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

The comment came as Obama reeled off a list of swing states with large Hispanic electorates, states he said he can carry in November if Hispanics register and vote.

“Every four years some of the closest contests take place in Florida, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico,” Obama said, pausing while audience members yelled other states, including Texas.

“Texas?” Obama said in a nod to reality, “well it hasn’t been that close yet, but we are going to try to make it close.”

He was more positive when somebody else yelled “California,” another state that has not been close in recent presidential contests.

“California is not close either. We are going to stomp him in California,” Obama said of GOP candidate John McCain.
