Yudof still quick with the one-liners

The budget cuts, unpaid furloughs and other financial blood-letting under way at the University of California can’t be much fund for Mark Yudof, who quit the chancellorship of the University of Texas System last year to lead the 10 UC campuses.

But judging by a recent Q and A in The New York Times, Yudof hasn’t lost his sense of humor. For instance, when asked what he thinks of the idea that no administrator at a state university should make more than the president of the United States, $400,000, he replied:

“Will you throw in Air Force One and the White House?”

University presidents already use palacial homes for free and all they do is ceremonial appearances and fundraisers.

By a different perspective

I wouldn’t trade jobs with him or Mack Brown or Bill Powers if you offered. First off, I wouldn’t have the skills to do what they do. Secondly, they work 18-hour days most of the year. Third, the hassle of their jobs takes years off their lives. If you look hard at University budgets, the administrative salaries are barely a drop in the bucket. Yudof and 100 other administrators could start working for free, and the UC system would still be in the financial toilet. Stop looking for scapegoats—it’s a larger issue than this.
