Hopson switch hurts Democratic hopes

State Rep. Chuck Hopson of Jacksonville is switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party today, setting back Democratic hopes of winning the Texas House.

A press release from Hopson’s campaign said he thinks President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats do not represent the concerns and values of his East Texas district. Hopson is scheduled to hold a press conference on his switch later this afternoon.

In 2008, Hopson won re-election by 114 votes. He likely would have faced even more difficulty in 2010, considering that Democrats have lost some of their momentum from the 2008 election.

“It takes strength and integrity to stand against the special interests — and while some members have that strength, others, like Chuck Hopson, do not,” said state Democratic Party chairman Boyd Richie.

Richie said Hopson had told Democratic members that he’d rather retire from the House than become a Republican.

With Hopson’s switch, Republicans will hold 77 seats in the Texas House and Democrats will hold 73. While Democrats say they remain confident that they can win a House majority next year, this is the second major blow in recent months to that effort. Earlier this year, Rep. David Farabee, D-Wichita Falls, announced that he would not seek re-election, and his seat is widely expected to fall into Republican hands.

In addition, a handful of Democrats who narrowly defeated Republican incumbents in recent years could get swept out of office if the economy does not bounce back.

Thank you, Representative Chuck Hopson! You are listening to the people and this will be remembered.Mr. Lloyd Doggett is supposedly my district’s rep., but obviously is not. Doggett is only concerned with his own selfish agendas and will never get my vote again. Hopefully, the narcisstic idiot has enough sense not to ride in small town parades again because he will be booed out of town.

The second Reagan Revolution has begun! Cant wait to see how huge this one will be. Remember Jimmy Carter? Obama is giving the GoP a gift that will never stop giving! Keep up the good work Obama. The GOP needs you.

THANK YOU, Rep. Chuck Hopson, for standing up to the ridiculous fatal blow that is the proposed health care legislation. It is nothing more than an “obscured” tax - fraud on the American public.

People, if we don’t get off this adolescent band wagon of name-calling and partisanship, we will sink. We are taking on water as it is while you idiots are busy fighting over the homecoming queen. Get a grip.

And don’t forget the other extreme nuts lobbying for their own agenda the everyone has to tolerate despite the lobbyests’ members intolerance for eveyone….the pro gay anti family anti religous freedom extremists, the legalists who do everything imaginable to be unethical, irresponsible on conflicting of interests because they assume government is based on criminal law (these are anti trial lawyer but have the criminal lawyers in their PACs).

Then there are the athiests (who are a public danger) who want to control and infringe on others, and the financial crooks (who gave us the Republican recession)…

They are all pimping for the wrong reasons.

One man having an identity crisis doesn’t mean anything for the Dem party. Perry was another flip flopper. It speaks to them as individuals. They are for sale to the highest bidder.

There are radicals in republican and democratic parties. Or rather radical extremists lobbying each party for influence that get mistaken for the party members themselves. Abortionists, NRA, white supremists, pro growth but small gov contradition lobbiests, deregulation nuts, anti capital punishment, pro capital punishment, the war mongers, the mega oil/corps on welfare lobbiests, the tax dodgers, etc ,etc….

Hopson is on to something, such as Exhibit A: The non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation just confirmed that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962) could land people in jail!

So, jr, when EXACTLY will you obots/demobots start taking responsibility for the mess?? Sure the little shrub screwed up just about everything, but do you ever anticipate turning the mirror on your party and its Dear Leader?

it’s difficult to read these demo bashers when Georgie Porgie Puddin’ ‘n Pie left it for Obama—— the econmy, the wars, the bailouts [yes, dumb-butts W handed out “stimulus” money last year], high unemployment—— the bashers came out in January blaming O for W’s mismanagement … how stoopit!

Keep in mind that Hopsaon almost ran as a Republican for the TX House in 2000, but he didn’t make the switch then b/c some democrats still had a conservative element. But there is no way any conservative democrat today support Obama’s unfunded mandates, global warmining initiatives, put-the-country-further-in-debt-stimulus package, and forced govt run healthcare that allows for federal funding of abortions. This Administration with Pelosi and Reid are just out of control and out of touch.

Boyd Richie has a lot of nerve talking about having “strength and integrity” to stand up to others…fine example he was, caving in to the Obamania after being such a big supporter of Hillary Clinton in last year’s primaries. When is Richie’s term up?

I have to agree with many posters below. I didn’t leave the Democratic party, it left me. I came from a middle-class, blue collar family. We were not liberal. We were conservative. We were conservative because we didn’t have a whole lot of money. We never missed meals, but we never go what we wanted because we just wanted it. It had to needed or earned. Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, there used to be many conservative democrats. But they were hounded out by the ultra far-left liberals in the 90’s and today. Those conservative democrats stood for the working folks. They believed in low taxes, so we could keep more of what we earned. They believed in practical social safety nets helped us up in a time of need, not social systems that enslaved us to the government and gave us entitlement and victimization at the same time. They believed in the family, that marriage was between one man and one woman. They believed in the righteousness of America. Believed that the farmer fed the world, not poisoned it. Believed that the worker wanted to work because he could, not because he felt he was entitled to it. They put the rights of people over the rights of animals. They worked to help the student, not bow down to the teacher unions. The were good people who did what was right, because they felt that’s what the people who elected them expected. Now they are trial lawyers who are prostitutes, who ***** themselves out to special interest groups for fat donations. They become servants with too many masters who are impenitent to do anything worthwhile. No, I didn’t leave them, they left me.

readers - i am going to try this one more time, since the first one a couple of hours ago was deleted for, i’m guessing, editorial reasons. what it said was, it’s not hopson’s switch that should worry the democrats, it’s news like the fact that lloyd doggett’s average net worth in 2008 was $19 million — yep, 19 with six zeros and some change. that public service is a real tough one, huh, at barely $100K a year? in the meantime, don’t worry fellow taxpayers. lloyd says he will NOT join the public health care plan like everyone else will be forced into. you da man, lloyd, you da man.

your headline writer stumbled on to a nearly accurate statement, but it ain’t chuck hopson whose hurting democratic hopes. it’s news like the fact that lloyd doggett’s average net worth last year was more than $19 million — yep, that’s a 19 with six zeros and some change behind it. seen THAT in this “news” paper? magically, your congressman got this wealthy all in the name of public service. what a guy. except he still won’t put himself in the “public option.”

STAND BY for more defections from the democratic party! The dems have become the MEGA-SPEND party with not one coherent consideration about WHO WILL PAY FOR HOW LONG? You cannot have endless “trillion dollar” NEW programs when the federal government is penniless! People are realizing the health care program needs revision, NOT SCRAPPING and starting completely over! Fiscal responsibility will be their downfall!

WE PAY 500 MILLION DOLLARS A DAY JUST IN INTEREST THAT THESE IDIOTS IN CONGRESS HAVE HANDED US AS A BILL. OBAMA IN HIS INSANITY WANTS TO KICK THAT UP TO 1.5 b A DAY IN INTEREST FOR WHICH WE GET NOTHING. HOW CAN WE SURVIVE AND COMPETE WITH THAT DEBT ON OUR BACKS. OBAMA WILL DESTROY YOUR KIDS CHANCES FOR EVER HAVING A SUCCESSFUL LIKE. THEY WILL AD 20% INCOME TAX INCREASE JUST TO PAY INTEREST ON THEIR DEBT TO CHINA AND INDIA. ALL INCUMBENTS THAT VOTED FOR THESE DEBTS LIKE LLOYD DOGGETT SHOULD BE RUN OUT OF OFFICE. DO THEY REALLY THINK WE ARE DUMB ENOUGH TO ENDORSE SUCH MISMANAGEMENT AND INCOMPENTENCE BY REELECTING THEM?

ALREADY YOU HEAR MORE AND MORE PEOPLE SAYING LLOYD DOGGETT HAS TO GO. HE HAS SCREWED ALL SENIORS IN HIS DISTRICT BY SUPPORTING HUGE CUTS IN MEDICARE. HOW CAN HE HAVE THE GALL TO RUN FOR REELCTION WITH HIS PITIFUL RECORD?

Democrats always do personal attacks on any one who does not drink their koolaid. Guess they dont have the mental capacity to even know what they stand for.. socialism, that is. Dobber, what specifically do you see in the Texas Democratic Party platform that you think is out of the political mainstream in Texas? Come on, I’ll wait - the platform is on their website. But I’m sure you won’t need to take the time to read it, since you already know what you’re talking about and can cite me a couple of examples. Well?

Hopson has finally realized what the rest of us old Democrats discovered some time ago …. He didn’t really desert the party, the party deserted all Texans long ago …. the platform is controlled by liberals so liberal that its values no longer represent, or even remotely resemble, the people of Texas. I just hope he remembers who is covering his back …. Even on a good day they aren’t much better …. Hi-Ho the Emperor Rick must go ….

Hopson’s district is R anyhow. He has been re-elected several times by a close vote and he knew it was either switch or leave. No big surprise here. Democrats will probably lose 2-3 seats next election if not more. It is going to be a rough year. Obamacare is not taking off and everything is working as usual. The Obama “change” has been a change from Bush to Obama.

Whether Democrat or Republican, there is no doubt that conservatism is on the rise. There is no doubt that this message will be sent in 2010 loud and clear. Red state democrats should definitely be concerned.

While it is true that 2010 will be a challenging year for Democrats, let us not forget that the old, bitter and rabid base of the Republicans is not sufficient to regain a political majority in this country.

This is like the good ole days in 1994 and 1995 when all sorts of moderate Dems became Republicans. The landslide victories by the Republicans on Tuesday are scaring a lot of moderate Dems and this move should not surprise anyone. In fact, we shouldn’t be shocked if there are more around the nation. The fact that the GOP even won a state senate seat by a 61% to 39% margin in Michigan on Tuesday that was previously Democratic, is sending shockwaves through that state, too. In CA Democratic LtGov Garamendi won a special election for a Democratic house seat with only 53% after Obama got 65% in Nov. 2010 is going to be bumpy for Democrats.

Thought it was funny for Richie to put down a fellow Democrat. And then accusing him of not having the “strength and integrity to stand against the special interests”. Sounds funny because the Dems have quotas for each of their special interest groups….except for their trial lawyers. They don’t need a quota, they just rent a Democrat when they need one. As O’Quinn did when he gave $3 million to one candidate. Or that other financial angel(rich lawyer) who paid for Edward’s love child to keep it secret until after the primary.
