Austin gas prices jump 14 cents in a week
Austin area gasoline prices rose 14 cents in the past week, the biggest jump in more than a year, AAA Texas reported.
The average price in Central Texas was $2.49, up from $2.35 a week ago.
The pattern was similar around the state, with the biggest increase being 17 cents in Galveston and the smallest being 9 cents in Texarkana.
Steep recent increases in the price of oil is one factor, said AAA spokesman Dan Ronan. Oil has risen to above $80 a barrel from below $70 just two weeks ago.
Additionally, Ronan said traders are buying and storing oil in anticipation of increased demand as the economy improves early next year. And a larger-than-usual number of refineries are undergoing fall maintenance.
Gas prices still are lower than they were at this time last year, but the gap is shrinking, AAA said.

Austin gas prices drop 22 cents in a month
Austin drivers are getting some relief, with gasoline prices that have fallen 22 cents in the past month.
The area’s average price per gallon was $2.34 on Thursday, down from $2.37 last week and $2.56 a month ago, according to AAA Texas.
The picture is similar statewide, AAA said. For the month of July so far, gas prices are the lowest they’ve been since 2005, according to AAA.
Using statewide averages — $2.31 this week compared to $2.54 a month ago — Dan Ronan, AAA spokesman, calculated that a driver whose car has a 14-gallon tank is spending $3.22 less for every fill-up.

Gas prices jump 5 cents overnight
Austin area gas prices have jumped 5 cents a gallon since Wednesday, according to AAA Texas.
The average was $1.61, up from $1.56 Wednesday.
Gas prices nationwide have been rising, although oil remains at about $40 a barrel, down from a peak last summer of almost $1.50.
Austin prices still are below those of a month ago, when the average was $1.67.

Gas falls below $3 a gallon
You aren’t hallucinating: Austin area gas prices have fallen below $3 a gallon, and you can pay as little as $2.38 if you’re willing to drive to Taylor.
The Central Texas average slipped below $3 yesterday and fell to $2.93 today, according to AAA Texas.
Falling oil prices — down to $75 a barrel today — and reduced demand because of the soft economy are the reasons, so while cheaper gas is a relief, it’s not necessarily something to celebrate. Forecasts are for the economy to remain in the dumps for months to come, while some energy industry analysts say oil prices are not likely to stay this low.
A year ago, gas was $2.70 a gallon, and it peaked at about $3.95 in July, according to AAA.
Meanwhile, austingasprices.com is showing the cheapest area prices in Taylor, where a Murphy station was advertising $2.38 and an H-E-B had gas at $2.39.

Gasoline prices hit $3.51 in Austin area
Austin area drivers are paying through the nose at the pump: Local gas prices hit $3.51 a gallon today, according to AAA Texas.
That’s up six cents from last Friday, and 33 cents — more than 10 percent — in the past month.
It could be worse: Some San Francisco area drivers encountered $4-a-gallon prices this morning. The national average was $3.61.
Relief, unfortunately, is not around the corner, experts say. Oil prices remain high and the summer driving season, when demand soars, is just weeks away.

Austin gas prices jump 5 cents in a week
Austin area gasoline prices hit almost $3.16 a gallon this week, up more than five cents since last week to a new record.
The national average is at a record $3.27 this week, and is likely to go higher, AAA reported. Oil prices are above $110 a gallon, with no signs of abating.
Diesel is pushing closer to $4 a gallon. The Austin area average was $3.86 today, up five cents from Wednesday.

Gas prices up about four cents in past week
Despite gas prices rising by almost 4 cents in Austin in the past week, drivers at a Chevron station south of downtown had mixed opinions this morning about whether prices are too high already, even as some spent upwards of $60 to fill up their tanks.
Regular self-serve gasoline in the Austin-San Marcos area is averaging $2.99 a gallon, about a nickel below the all-time high set in May, according to the weekly AAA Texas gas price survey released today. One thing to take solace in, however: average gas prices nationally are more than 10 cents above Austin’s prices, at $3.10 a gallon.
Steve Gillis, who estimates he puts about $100 into his Ford F150 each week, said today’s prices are “way too high.”
“It’s just about greed,” he said. “It’s capitalism gone amok.”
Jessie Dawson said she tries to drive as little as possible now and is debating whether it would be less expensive to fly to visit her parents, who live about four hours away, rather than drive.
After filling up his Scion at a Chevron station south of downtown, Carlos Godoy reasoned that gas prices could be even higher.
“If you compare Texas to California, it’s a lot cheaper here than there,” he said.
Ford Alexander spent about $64 filling up his Chevy Tahoe this morning. He said that with inflation, “maybe it’s not that unreasonable” for gas prices to be so high.
A year ago, gas prices in the area averaged $2.21 a gallon.

A little relief at the gas pump
A news release from AAA Texas
Motorists saw slight relief this week as pump prices in Texas moved lower after eight weeks of near record averages, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The statewide average price for a gallon of gas is $2.873 a gallon – a weekly drop of six cents. Corpus Christi has the cheapest fuel at $2.749 a gallon – a decrease of ten cents. El Paso, which set a new all-time record last week, has the highest average on the list at $2.936 a gallon.
In the Austin-San Marcos area, the price was $2.864, down 2.7 cents from last week.
“A major factor for the easing of gas prices is that U.S. oil inventories are currently at healthy levels, despite the lofty price of crude this year, said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “The end of the summer driving season is getting closer and that is usually when demand for gasoline drops, said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas.
The national average for regular self-serve gasoline fell below $3.00 a gallon this week to its current average of $2.977 – down six cents from last week.
