Let’s just hope they pay fair wages with basic health benefits. Many of Waco’s workers earn peanuts with little or no health insurance and no pensions. Most of Waco’s workers are slaves who live in poverty. No unions. No decent standard of living.

Be careful who you blame for the low standards of living Fred, it sounds like you are blaming the employers.

Gee, maybe he should blame the employers. Business has never been man’s best friend. Their sole aim is profits, profits and more profits. If that means paying substandard wages and ripping off workers or even moving their business overseas where there are REALLY no rules, then it’s just business. But bottom line, it means more profits. In the meantime, if you have to go with out insurance, well, so sorry. Can’t pay for your car? Why, biking is good for you! What? Can’t afford a house? Gee, there are plenty of apartments. And so, and so on ad nauseam…
Forgive me if I have such a poor opinion of big business. And I am one of the lucky ones with health insurance!

Profit for companies = jobs and tax revenue for the community, I like having food on the tables, roads and schools for little children, don’t you?

Have you read the news lately? More than 17,000 lost their jobs in January, and that’s not counting those who dropped off the rolls. And, payrolls are dropping as well; cost of living hasn’t kept up with inflation; while gas prices are dropping, home heating and electricity costs are rising. Pretty soon, a person will have to work two or more jobs just to keep up with the bills, but big business will keep on rollin’…

The problem is much larger than you are giving it credit for. I wish we could put simple blame on it, like blaming the employers, but employers are the last step in a long line of circumstances that affect standards of living, wages, etc. The fact is this: the uneducated will remain poor, and we must do everything that we can as a community to delver a quality education. I do believe that education can solve so many of Waco’s problems, and I want to unite the community in a positive manner rather than rehash all the glaring problems. Please, when you post comments, discuss with friends/neighbors, lets focus on fixing education. Join with me in a rally behind WISD, MCC, and bringing a State University to Waco! It sounds like we are both proud to be from Waco, lets make it contagious!
