Living in Lorena we have about a 10-15 mile drive to most places in Waco, and we’ve been rationing our trips to town for a few months now. For example, if we rent a movie from Blockbuster on Valley Mills Drive on Friday and it’s due back on Sunday, it’s cheaper to pay the late fee and drop it off Monday on the way into work than drive in on Sunday just for that.
For us a few things that help are my wife and I carpooling as much as possible, eating and shopping in Lorena when possible, though it’s still cheaper to shop at HEB in Hewitt than Brookshire Brothers in Lorena for the weekly groceries, and even things like driving a few miles under the speedlimit have given us noticeable savings each month. Doing this we’re still paying only about $250/month in gas, though this is up from less than $100/month a few years back.
Just some thoughts —

Mike, you should check out a company called Duckwall/ALCO. There’s one of their stores located in Clifton and in Hamilton. They target small towns and are benefiting from the higher fuel prices thanks to people staying home. The company is headquartered in Abilene, KS. www.alco.com
