Q: Barbra Streisand always used to refer to herself as an actress who sings (not a singer who acts). Yet, in her 40+ years in show business, she has actually made very few flims. Why? Also, there’s rumor that she’ll be in the film version of the musical Sunset Boulevard. Any truth to this?
A: Because Streisand has hit “diva” status, it’s safe to say she’s transcended all categories—singer, actress, director, humanitarian. But yes, she did say that—before 1983’s Yentl, her directorial debut, and then, seemed to concentrate on making movies (not to mention starring in them, executive producing them, singing the theme songs from them, and everything in between). She is a true Renaissance woman.
As one blogger put it, “[Barbra] once referred to herself with monumental understatement as “an actress who sings.” At this juncture of her unprecedented career, the Academy Award-winning star might modestly be termed “a filmmaker who also acts and sings.”
To answer your other question, yes—Streisand, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close are all vying to play Sunset Boulevard diva Norma Desmond on the big screen, according to Hollywood reports and London’s Daily Telegraph.
