Ladies, go H.O.G. wild
As the price of gas continues to teeter near $4 per gallon, more and more of us are opting for alternative modes of transportation. Cheryl Moore, who teaches weekend riding courses at the Stone Fort Cycle Center on U.S. Hwy. 59, said her weekend classes are packed, and not just with men. The motorcycle enthusiast told me recently that the number of women who sign up for the introductory classes have started to rival the number of men, something she is particularly excited about. The Ladies of Harley, a local auxiliary group of the Harley Owners Group, have tapped into that fact by offering a wide variety of year-round events aimed at encouraging women to ride. Earlier this month, they took an overnight to trip to Onalaska’s Water Front Lodge on Lake Livingston, where women bonded with not only each other, but the outdoor scenery of East Texas, as well. Lila Gaddy, who helped to organize the event, said it was exciting for the women because they were able to be a part of an activity that is growing. The organization is in the midst of coordinating it’s next female activity — a riding course that will enable women learn more about the parts of the motorcycle, and how to properly care for them. To find out more about the course, call Texas Thunder Harley-Davidson at 715-0100.
