On bended knee
Being that my best friend recently got engaged, I’ve felt particularly romantic lately. She and her fiance are what I would consider a perfect match. They have a lot in common, but yet enough differences to keep themselves interested in each other. While I prefer the manner in which she was proposed to — they were at home rather than in a stuffy, expensive restaurant or a public park with everyone watching — the engagement story I heard today was quite romantic, and would not be so bad. Not that I have any immediate prospects, or have any inclination to be married before 30, the story was interesting, and made me ponder on whether it’s better to wait to get married until you’re financially secure or to just do it whenever you find the right person. Jim Collins, a Nashville songwriter who penned Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” and “Good Stuff,” spoke to handful of NHS choir students today, touching briefly on his own writing process. He described a song he wrote for his daughter and her husband, and in detailing the lyrics, revealed how his son-in-law proposed. Collins said his son-in-law flew his daughter to Japan for New Year’s Eve, and on the tallest mountain in the country, got down on his knee and popped the question at midnight. Ahhhh! So romantic, but also so expensive. Do the people who wait until they are financially secure, let’s say early 30s, have it better than those who get married in their early to mid- 20s? Are there not as many fights or is it easier to discuss the things that come along with monetary decisions? And does the relationship itself become better at a more mature age? I’m not sure how old Collins’ daughter is, but it appears that her husband must have been doing quite well in order to pull that proposal. Perhaps it’s not necessarily the age, but is it better to wait until you have a steady income and secure job before taking the plunge?
