80-year friendships
When longtime residents Brownie Covin and Joyce Swearingen told me they had been friends for more than 80 years, I nearly fell off my seat. “From the time I was six or seven, I knew Joyce,” Brownie said. She is now 86. Is it just me or is that incredible? The women experienced their entire lives together: childhood, being a teen, first and last loves, children and grandchildren. I would have thought that by 40 they would have run out of things to say, but as Joyce explained to me, that was never the case. I, myself, have one friend that I could imagine having this length of friendship with. We met in high school, and since our friendship began a decade ago, I’ve felt that she’s been more than just a friend, much in the same way I think Brownie feels of Joyce. We spent every waking moment together in high school and college, but when our careers began we had to move in opposite directions. Amazingly enough, we have remained close, and we’re able to see each other every few months. But, no matter how long we are friends, I don’t think it will ever add up to 80 years.
