6/27 Church notes

The Daily Sentinel

Friday, June 26, 2009

Beginning Sunday and continuing through July Fourth, First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Hospital St., will host over 100 young people serving in the UM ARMY. United Methodist Action Reach-out Mission by Youth is the youth equivalent of a mission trip. Each year United Methodist churches throughout Texas team up with hundreds of visiting youth groups bringing help and support to those in need. The purpose of UM ARMY is to provide Christ-centered, quality youth work camps that serve people in need and promote spiritual growth and leadership development in youth.

Just as the youth from First United Methodist Church, Nacogdoches, spent time in the southeast Houston area earlier this month, teams from other parts of Texas will come to Nacogdoches to provide much-needed repairs for local residents. These youth and their leaders will be scraping and painting and building ramps and reinforcing porches and clearing yards; meeting new people and making new friends along the way. In return, the youth and their sponsors will find hospitality at First United Methodist Church, where they will rest and eat and worship and play as they go about the business of "building the kingdom, doing the Carpenter's work."

Through UM ARMY's presence in Nacogdoches, not only will our citizens find a helping hand, they will also have relational experiences with youth they might otherwise never meet. For information about the youth program, call 564-8308.

First United Methodist Church pastor Dr. Bill Gandin will continue his sermon series on "MOG: The Missing Link", with Sunday's sermon titled "Work: Take This Job and Love It." Text for this sermon comes from Matthew 9:35-38.

Fourth of July fireworks can be viewed from the front lawn of First United Methodist Church following the annual Fourth of July ice cream social at 7:30 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring their favorite ice cream and join the church and community in a celebration of America's independence. Bring lawn chairs, too.

Also, a hot dog supper with soft drinks and chips, hosted by members of Boy Scout Troop 161 will be available beginning at 4 p.m. The suggested donation to the Scouts is $3 per serving.

On July 5, the Rev. Meredith Wende will conclude the "MOG: The Missing Link" sermon series. The message is titled "Jesus: His Way Everyday!" and the text is Col. 3: 12-17.

Participants in the Amazing Faiths dinner dialogues will hold a coordinating meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12. Co-sponsored by Unity Church of Nacogdoches and First United Methodist Church, the dinner dialogue program brings people of all faiths and no faith together to share a meal and have a guided conversation about the role of faith or spirituality in their lives.

This meeting of the participating churches, mosques and temples will determine the projected size of community involvement, discuss advertising methods, and select moderators for the dinners.

The dinners start with each participant selecting a card and then answering a question broad enough that followers of any faith can draw on their personal experiences to answer. After everyone takes a turn, there is a break, and then each person has a few minutes to speak freely.

Each Amazing Faiths dinner group is limited to about 10 participants with a trained moderator and is held in a participants home to keep the gatherings intimate.

Admission is free. Current participants include Unity Church, First Methodist Church, Austin Heights Baptist Church, Spiritual Truth Fellowship, the East Texas Islamic Society in Tyler, two Jewish Synagogues in Tyler and the Bahai community.
