Authorities investigating Commercial Bank robbery in Lufkin

Lufkin Daily News

Friday, July 03, 2009

LUFKIN — The FBI has been called in to investigate a robbery at Commercial Bank of Texas on Lufkin's Tulane Drive Friday afternoon.

"At approximately 2 p.m. a white male entered the bank and presented a note," said Lt. Charlie Graham of the Lufkin Police Department.

Graham was unable to confirm many details of the robbery because it is now under FBI jurisdiction. Graham said that a Texas Ranger is also involved in the investigation.

The Commercial Bank of Texas' Angelina County President Brian Cyr was at the bank when it was robbed, and described the robbery as a "very quiet" event.

"He just walked in, produced the note, and then ran away," Cyr said. "He was just someone looking to get some money the easy way."

Although Cyr is not able to release a specific amount that the suspect got away with, he says that the bank is "adequately insured," and is thankful that nobody was hurt.

"Everyone inside is safe, and that's the main priority," he said. ''We're not worried about what is missing as long as everyone is OK."

According to the police scanner, the suspect is in his mid-40s, wearing a black cap, sunglasses and a white shirt with gray lettering that spells out "Vans." Also according to the scanner, the suspect is driving an older model white Camero or Firebird with no back license plate.

Surveillance cameras captured the suspect and Cyr is confident that with the quality of those images, as well as having the FBI on the case, the suspect shouldn't be at large for much longer.

"It's now the FBI's turn to go out and catch him," Cyr said.
