Voters heading to the polls

The Daily Sentinel

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Today is election day for the state constitutional and city charter amendments elections and a Martinsville ISD bond election.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 12 polling sites around the county, and city voters can vote at either the North Street Church of Christ or at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary.

Elections Administrator Debra Gaston said due to the low voter turnout during early voting — 823 early ballots were cast — the elections office combined many of the polling places. She said anyone unsure of where to vote today can contact the elections office at 560-7825 and someone will direct them.

Gaston said she anticipates about the same number of voters will cast ballots today as they did in early voting.

She reminds those headed to the polls today to bring either their voter registration certificate or some other form of identification.

"It can be a checkbook or a utility bill, anything like that," she said.

Gaston said voters may also bring informational materials on the 11 constitutional amendments and 10 changes to the city's charter into the booth.

"The Legislature changed that several years ago to allow written materials to be brought in to assist voters in making their choices," she said.
