"Lavoe biopic stumbles into show-business clichés, saved only by Anthony's vocals and credible dramatic work from Lopez."

"Mark Anthony did an excellent job portraying Hector Lavoe, (even though Lavoe was not as skinny). This movie portrays yet another minority who springs to stardom only to let it be destroyed by tragedy and narcotics. The movie is pretty accurate to what it was like at the time, I just wish they'd show us Puertoricans in a more positive light. "
