Complex time travel bridles 'Wife's' promise

John DeFore

Austin American Statesman

"Likable actors such as Rachel McAdams and Ron Livingston look unexpectedly shallow here, in need of assistance director Robert Schwentke can't give them."

Not Feeling It

"There was nothing remarkable about this movie. It was predictable, and the actors didn't seem to have any depth of (believable) emotion at all. Mid-movie, you don't buy that they have a timeless bond, which is kind of OK, but by the end of the movie, there should be *something* convincing there. But there's not. I couldn't wait for it to end. To be fair, though, the women sitting behind me were pretty much bawling, so maybe I was just in robot mode when I watched it. "

"They did not deviate too far from the book. The book starts with a naked older man materializing before a 6 year old girl, so I wondered how the movie would handle this and not be to pedophilish creepy. They have Henry meet his future wife for the first time when she is 20 and he is 28 so they avoid a rather awkward situation. I enjoyed this movie, probably because I liked the book, but.... if you only go to one movie this summer, District 9 wins hands down."
