A new twist on a classic tale

Joe Gross

Austin American-Statesman

"A 'kidult's' idea of a children's movie — suitable not for the young, but likely to be considered profound by the sorts of over-21s who long for a rumpus-making vision of childhood that Sendak never believed quite existed in the first place."

Love it

"I am so surprised to hear that people did not like the movie! My friends and I all thought is was fantastic. It was incredibly heartfelt and artistic. Yes, it is sad, but it is about life. Growing up is extremely hard to do. Even though we forget as adults, being a kid is really tough! I think the movie is incredibly real. I love the way the monsters resemble characters in his real life. I would not say this movie is for children so much, I don't thing they would understand it. "

Disapointing

"Unfortunately our entire family was very disapointed in this film. It is basically about a little bi-polar boy who cannot control his emotions and bites his mom in the shoulder then runs away. We had higher expectations and our children were very disapointed. I suppose they are used to the calibar of Disney and Pixar these days and we rarely go out to the movies and then they see this. It drags on and gets boring. (Both us parents fell asleep). If you want to see a kids movie, there are so many better ones out there now... don't waste your family time or money on this one."

both disturbing and disappointing...

"Definitely NOT for kids. In fact.. not for me either. The little brat and the monsters aren't likable at all. Both the kids and the monsters act bi-polar, very disturbing. There is not really much of a story line. This movie is a total disappointment and I felt so bad for taking my son to see such a movie. "

"The movie, I believe, is aimed at grown-ups who grew up around the time the book was published. We've been waiting for Spike Jonze's vision, or any talented filmmaker' vision, to create Max's world on film."
