Texas soldier killed in Afghanistan

A 26-year-old soldier from Terrell has been killed in Afghanistan, according to his family.

Dallas-Fort Worth television station KDFW reports that the family of U.S. Army Spc. Joseph Michael Lewis released a statement confirming his death.

The Terrell Tribune reports that Rev. Diana Freeman of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Terrell said Lewis' family was notified early Tuesday evening by military personnel.

In a statement, the family fondly remembered Lewis, lovingly referred to as "G.I. Joe."

He leaves behind a wife, Theresa, and an infant daughter, Abigail.

Lewis is the second soldier from Terrell to die in battle in less than a month.
