Tomball: students, staff taken to hospital after chemical spill

At least 17 people required medical attention today after a chemical spill during prep for a science class at a Houston-area high school.

Authorities say part of Tomball High School had to be evacuated, but the all-clear was later given and classes resumed by late morning.

A school district spokeswoman says a science teacher preparing an experiment for class spilled an alcohol-related chemical.

The fumes can cause breathing problems.

Students attending classes in rooms near the science lab were taken to the nearby football stadium -- as a precaution.

The Tomball Fire Department Haz-Mat team was on the scene.

District officials told KHOU television that ten teachers and five students were treated and released from Tomball Regional Medical Center. Two other students remained at the health care facility.
