Danyelle Smith, 18, of Nacogdoches died at 10:30 a.m., Saturday after being involved in a one vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy. 96 that occurred on May 2, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials. Smith was riding in a 2003 Dodge pickup driven by Dustin Michael Cooper, 23, of Center at 8:30 p.m., heading northbound when the vehicle left the road about 4 miles north of Center and hit a guardrail. The vehicle went airborne and struck a tree, DPS said. Smith was taken to East Texas Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead, and the driver was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and treated for head and leg injuries, according to DPS. It was determined both occupants were wearing seat belts by Trooper Jimmy Benton who surveyed the scene.
