A Nacogdoches grand jury handed up an indictment to a Nacogdoches man, who is charged with shooting his wife with a shotgun in April.
The man, Edward Lewis, is charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly shot his wife, Marilyn Lewis, 45, at a residence off U.S. Hwy. 259 near the Rusk County line, according to Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss.
A woman called 911 to report her granddaughter, Marilyn, had been shot, Kerss said.
Sheriff's deputies had responded to the Lewis residence earlier in the day to mediate an argument over property, but "there was no indication given during those calls that violence was likely," Kerss said, though he added that deputies had responded to domestic disputes at the location before.
Lewis became further agitated and retrieved a shotgun from his home, Kerss said. He then re-entered the victim's grandmother's home where she was at the time, made some brief statements and fired a shotgun blast.
The blast struck Marilyn in the upper shoulder, head and neck areas. She was treated at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital before being released.
