Nickevette Ronshondo Carey, the 20-year-old man charged with capital murder in connection with the weekend death of Michael Motte, made references to robbing the former SFA football player prior to fatally shooting him early Saturday, police documents reveal.
According to an arrest affidavit, Carey and four people he was with at Harlon's Barbecue noticed Motte with a large sum of money, and after making a reference to robbing him, Carey left the business ahead of his four companions, who left shortly thereafter.
The four companions told police as they were standing outside the restaurant when they heard gunshots and fled the scene. They soon received a call from Carey requesting them to pick him up at the corner of Powers Street and Old Tyler Road, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit states that when they arrived at the intersection, Carey entered their blue Dodge Durango with a handgun in one hand and a sum of money in the other. The occupants told police that when he entered the car, Carey stated that he had robbed and shot Motte.
Motte, who was found by police lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds at 1:46 a.m., died shortly after he arrived at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, according to initial reports.
The affidavit states that dispatchers were notified of a blue Dodge Durango fleeing the scene of the shooting. Police located the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver did not immediately stop. The affidavit says that near intersection of Old Tyler Road and CR 804, a black male exited the vehicle with an object in his hand. The remaining four occupants were detained and questioned by police.
Carey, a 2007 graduate of Nacogdoches High School, was located several hours later in Shelby County and arraigned that afternoon in Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Lee Ann Goerner's court. No bond was set.
Prior to the shooting, Carey had been staying with his mother at her home on First Street.
"He's never here," his mother said from the steps of her front door, when asked if he lived with her permanently. She did not wish to comment further, but did describe the news of hearing her son shot another man as "shocking."
