Friends, coaches and fellow classmates at SFA remember Michael Motte as "a positive role model" and "overall good guy."

Motte, 24, was shot and killed early Saturday as he left Harlon's Barbecue. Nickevett Rhonshondo Carey, 20, of Nacogdoches has been charged with his murder.

Motte remembered as a caring, loving guy

"He was a very involved young man," Beverly Farmer said of Motte. As the director of the SFA Student Activities Association, Farmer interacted with Motte through Panhellenic meetings and various other activities in which he participated with his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha.

"He was a very nice guy and well liked throughout the university," she said.

Motte, president of the fraternity, was no stranger to community service. He involved himself and his fraternity brothers in numerous local projects with the Boys & Girls Club and Head Start. He also helped organize a special pep rally for students gearing up for the TAKS test at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary last February.

"Mike was just so caring," said Terence King, one of his line brothers (a fraternity brother who pledged into the fraternity at the same time as Motte). "He always thought about others. He was always willing to help out anybody and was always willing to give. That's just the type of person he was."

Maurice Johnson, another of his line brothers, echoed those sentiments, adding that Motte's loving personality helped him learn how to vocalize his own love of friends.

"If you were having a bad day, that was only until you ran into Mike," said another of his line brothers, Jeremy Johnson.

In addition to his work in the community, Motte played for the SFA football team from 2003 until 2007.

SFA head coach J.C. Harper, who was a defensive coordinator when Motte played for the team, described him as "a team leader."

"He had a big influence on the players of our football team," Harper said. "They looked up to him very much, and respected him and leaned on him quite a bit."

Motte was a starting fullback and was named twice to the All-Southland Conference team.

Even in high school, Motte juggled academics, community projects and football, according to his former coach Todd Schonhar, who now coaches at SFA.

"He had a very high GPA. He was a quality young man and a team leader both on the field and off," Schonhar said. "He was great kid."

Motte attended North Shore Senior High in Galena Park, a suburb of Houston.

Mike Santiago, a former SFA head coach, echoed the sentiments of the other coaches, adding that, "he was a good guy, he got his degree and had everything in front of him."

A group called In Loving Memory of Michael Motte has been created for friends and classmates to share memories of their late friend on the social networking Web site Facebook. To access the group, visit www.facebook.com and browse student groups.
