An unsatisfactory interlocal agreement with local volunteer fire departments could cost the Nacogdoches County more than $11,000, according to County Judge Joe English.
The commissioners will meet Tuesday to discuss making a budget amendment to pay several volunteer fire departments, including Appleby, Melrose and Garrison, for supplies used to clear roads following Hurricane Ike. The Federal Emergency Management Agency rejected the interlocal agreement with the VFDs and will not reimburse the county, English said. The interlocal agreement, which was drafted by former County Judge Sue Kennedy, was not acceptable by FEMA standards because it did not address all fire services expected of the volunteer fire departments. The court will discuss adopting a new agreement in the coming weeks, according to English.
County Land Agent George Perry Campbell will also give the court an update on the Lake Naconiche project. Campbell recently met with the Nacogdoches County Parks Board to discuss plans for roads going into the park. Construction of the roads and parking lot could be delayed by as much as four months, but parks board Chairman Jimmy Mize said the park could still be open by the end of next summer.
The court will also consider implementing a burn ban. Even after Friday's rainstorms, much of the county is in the danger zone on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index. Most of the county is in the 600-700 range of the index that runs from 0-800, with higher numbers representing the driest conditions and greatest risk for fire.
The commissioners will not meet for budget workshops until they have received oil and gas revenue data from the chief appraiser's office. The numbers are not expected until early August, which will give the court a short window to develop a budget for the coming fiscal year, English said. Oil and gas revenues are likely to be 25 to 30 percent lower than the previous year, according to English.
"There's no doubt that this is going to be a tight budget year," he said.
In other business, the court will:
