Grand jury

Nacogdoches man faces felony arson charge

Saturday, October 31, 2009

A Nacogdoches man faces a felony arson charge in connection with a fire that damaged an Elizabeth Street residence on Oct. 5, after a local grand jury handed up indictments Friday.

Jarvance Alonzo Menefee, 29, of Nacogdoches, made threats about burning down 2627 Elizabeth St. during a disturbance that occurred prior to the fire on Oct. 5, according to an arrest affidavit.

Nacogdoches Fire Department Division Chief Del Birdwell, who investigated the fire, reported that one of the individuals from the disturbance stated that Menefee had been in the area at the time of the fire, and arrest documents show his address as 2619 Elizabeth St. Another individual contacted the police later in the week to speak with someone investigating the fire, according to the affidavit. When the individual met with Birdwell a couple days later, the person stated that Menefee had been having problems with individuals in the Mill Pond area, and Menefee had stated that he planned to terrorize the area before he was killed or killed someone, according to the affidavit. The affidavit also states that the individual told Birdwell that he had spoken to Menefee two or three more times, and Menefee had said the police were looking for him because he had burned a house.

Birdwell stated in the affidavit that there were no utilities connected to the structure, and the majority of the fire damage was found on the back porch and back wall and extending into the residence. He also stated that the back of the residence was determined to be the point of origin for the fire, but there was no source of ignition on the back porch to have started it.
