NWS finds no evidence to substantiate tornado reports

The rain and wind from last Thursday's storm had plenty of potential to generate a tornado, and although the National Weather Service issued a warning for communities in eastern Nacogdoches County, the evidence was not found to substantiate it.

The National Weather Service concluded Tuesday that a tornado did not touch down in Nacogdoches County.

That's not to say that tornados were not reported. A total of 24 have currently been counted as a result of the storm system that passed through Texas and on into Louisiana and parts of Arkansas, according to Keith Stellman, warning coordinator meteorologist for the NWS.

"The closest one we found to you guys was in Gary, Texas," Stellman said. "We have not found or heard of any (tornado) damage for the Nacogdoches area."

The tornado that was reported had all the elements of a tornado, according to radar signatures, Stellman said, but it never made contact with the ground.

Reports and information are still coming to the NWS, as officials gather data and add it to their Web site, srh.noaa.gov/shv.

"We're starting to plot them and put together a summery on our Web site," Stellman said. "There are more listed than plotted on the map currently, but we are getting caught up."

The Web site also only showed 16 tornados listed on Tuesday afternoon, but Stellman said the most current reports made have not been added.
