The boys are back in town; Delta Sig alums return with tradition

Alumni of Stephen F. Austin State University's oldest fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, are holding a reunion this weekend and will bringing back a tradition known as the "victory line" to Saturday's Lumberjack football game.

The 'Delta Sigs' arrived Friday with their wives and families and were provided free tickets by the university's alumni association so that they can all sit together at today's football game that kicks off at 6 p.m. in Homer Bryce Stadium when the 'Jacks take on Nicholls State in the final home game of the season.

Organizers say the Delta Sig reunion is being dubbed the "Hippie Years Reunion," because it primarily includes members who graduated in the 1960s and early '70s.

This afternoon, on the field of Homer Bryce Stadium, around 50 members of the fraternity that began the lost tradition of creating a victory line before the games will once again return to the field and raise their ax handles over the 6-2 SFA Lumberjacks as the athletes run out onto the field to square off against the Nicholls State Colonels.

The 'Delta Sigs' were born from the 'Sawyers' social club, which was formed in the 1930s and eventually became the first Greek organization on campus in 1960.

Their adopted trademark became their custom-painted ax handles, now a mainstay of SFA campus culture. But at the time, the only ones allowed to walk around campus with their ax handles were the members of the elite 'Delta Sig' brotherhood who used them as an instrument of intimidation during home football games.

"Back in the day, Delta Sigs were the only ones allowed to walk around with the ax handles," said Delta Sig member Tuck Kemper, who is helping to organize this weekend's reunion. "We used to take them to the stadium, which back then was all steel, and we'd bang the stands in unison, which was really quite a sound."

Kemper said that some of the Delta Sigs coming to Nacogdoches this weekend haven't been back since they graduated, and the fraternity hasn't had a major reunion in nearly 20 years.

"We have Delta Sigs coming in from all corners to be here this weekend," he said. "It's really going to be a great chance for us to just catch up and remember the old days."

Besides spending time tailgating and rooting for the Lumberjacks, the fraternity brothers will also be holding fellowship and paying tribute to their fraternity and school, as well as preparing for the fraternity's 50th anniversary next year.
