Commissioners to set flood elevation level at Lake Nacogdoches

Sunday, November 08, 2009

County commissioners will discuss and possibly set a basic flood elevation level for Lake Nacogdoches Tuesday at the commissioners court meeting.

The court meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the courthouse. However, prior to the meeting, a public hearing will take place at 8:30 a.m. so that commissioners can take public comment concerning the establishment of the base flood level around the lake.

County Judge Joe English said the county is looking to set a flood elevation level to help identify those properties that are in the flood plain for insurance purposes.

"If we set that flood elevation then that will tell those insurance companies who is and who is not in the flood area, and I think it'll help the homeowners to know definitely what those boundaries are, and they can make a decision on whether they need flood insurance," he said.

Among those areas that could be in the flood plain is the subdivision George Middlebrook III has established on CR 755. English said the court agreed to postpone granting the subdivision plat at a previous meeting until flood elevations had been established, and following action on setting that level, commissioners will consider accepting Middlebrook's final subdivision plat.

"That way when he starts selling those lots, people will know what the flood area is," English said.

The court will also consider appointing English as the county flood administrator. English said the county currently does not have one, and by appointing someone to that position, the county will be able to review the locations of subdivisions to ensure that they're not in a flood area.

Commissioners will also consider accepting a bond for deputy constable precinct 4 Rusty Allen, a bond renewal for deputy constable precinct 1 Russell White and the appointment of Dustin Roenne as reserve deputy constable precinct 1.
