LUFKIN — A 41-year-old Huntington ISD secondary school teacher has resigned following an investigation into allegations she had sex with a 17-year-old male student, according to HISD superintendent Dr. Eric Wright.
The teacher's name was not being released Thursday because the case is still under investigation. She turned in her resignation to Wright after the allegation surfaced Wednesday, Wright said.
Child Protective Services contacted Wright after receiving a call from the student's mother.
"We are going to fully cooperate with law enforcement and the judicial system," Wright said.
Wright said he would not name the campus at which the teacher taught because it could easily identify the student. He said the student is back in school and the district would provide counseling services to him if needed.
The school board has not approved the teacher's resignation, but Wright expected it would later this month as a formality.
A call to Huntington Police Department Thursday morning was not immediately returned.
Although the student is of the legal age to consent to sex, Texas passed a law in 2003 making it a second-degree felony offense for a teacher to have sexual contact with a student in the same school, regardless of age. If convicted of the crime, a teacher could face up to 20 years in prison.
