NOV. 3 ELECTION

Amendment would affect land next to military bases

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Texans go to the polls Nov. 3 to vote on 11 proposed state constitutional amendments. Starting today, we take a closer look at each ballot proposition.

Prop. 1

Proposition 1 authorizes the Legislature to allow cities and counties to issue bonds to finance the purchase of land next to military installations.

Supporters say: Allows local governments to protect military installations from development that might be incompatible, such as schools or homes.

Opponents say: Could lead to higher property tax burden for some property owners.

Early voting began Monday and ends Oct. 30.
