NOV. 3 ELECTION

Proposition 4

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Election Day issue

Texans go to the polls Nov. 3 to vote on 11 proposed state constitutional amendments. Each day through Nov. 1, we'll take a closer look at one ballot proposition.

Prop. 4

Proposition 4 establishes a National Research University Fund to provide funding for seven of Texas' emerging research universities to achieve national prominence.

Supporters say:Texas needs more top tier universities to foster a highly educated work force and to compete with other states. The fund would support the next tier of universities without taking resources from the current top tier schools, the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.

Opponents say:At a time of economic downturn and limited resources, the funding should be targeted to fewer than seven universities, those with the best chance of attaining national prominence.

Early voting began Monday and ends Oct. 30.
