NOV. 3 BALLOT

Proposition 5

Monday, October 26, 2009

Election Day issue

Texans go to the polls Nov. 3 to vote on 11 proposed state constitutional amendments. Each day through Nov. 1, we'll take a closer look at one ballot proposition.

Prop. 5

Proposition 5 allows a consolidated appraisal review board for appraisal districts that contain more than one county. Currently, each county must have its own review board.

Supporters say: The change would allow review boards to operate more efficiently, especially in sparsely populated counties where it's difficult to find people to serve on the boards.

Opponents say: Local review boards know their county markets best, and bringing in outsiders could result in a loss of local control.

Early voting ends Friday.
