FRISCO — Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls have been selected as the preseason favorites to win the Southland Conference men's basketball regular-season championship by a vote of the league's coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Sam Houston State received the most first-place votes in the coaches' poll and tied for the most first-place votes in the SID poll.

The Bearkats were picked in both polls to successfully defend its division title from a season ago, collecting seven first-place votes and 61 points in the coaches' poll and five first-place votes and 58 points in the SID poll. The coaches picked SFA to defend its East Division title with 58 points, while the SIDs think Nicholls will improve last year's second-place divisional finish to win the East Division this season.

FRISCO — Stephen F. Austin and Lamar are the favorites to win the Southland Conference East and West Divisions in the 2009-10 preseason coaches' and sports information director's womens basketball polls that were released today by the league office.

The Southland began divisional play in the 2006-07 season when Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi joined the league. It was decided at the time that Lamar and Stephen F. Austin would switch divisions every third season to help keep a fair balance between the divisions. The 2009-10 season marks the second season under the current alignment.

In the coaches' poll, Stephen F. Austin received a commanding nine first-place votes with 63 points and 10 first-place votes with 65 points in the SID poll. Lamar received six first-place votes with 59 points in the coaches' poll and five first-place votes with 56 points in the SID poll.

With coach Lee Ann Riley at the helm, the Ladyjacks have claimed three regular-season and three tournament crowns. SFA is the only Southland team to have played in the conference postseason every year since the tournament's reinstatement in 1988. The Ladyjacks return all five starters from a 10-win conference season and look to claim its first regular season title since 1996.
