SFA's Crabtree named SLC Hitter of Week

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

The Lumberjacks have won eight straight games after a sweep of Texas State over the weekend, and have now won back-to-back SLC Hitter of the Week honors after Kevin Crabtree snagged the honor for the second time this year on Monday.

Crabtree was first named SLC Hitter of the Week on April 7th and this week follows up Noel Trevino to give the Lumberjacks a SLC-best four weeks to win the award this season. It is also the first time this season any team in the SLC has had someone from its squad named Hitter of the Week in consecutive weeks.

The senior from Sugar Land hit .476 for the week in extending his team-best hit streak to 13 games. He had six extra-base hits in five games, including home runs in three straight to give him a career-high and team-best nine for the year.

He opened the week with a 3-for-5 outing in an extra-inning win over UT-Pan American with a pair of doubles, then had his second of three straight multi-hit games with a 2-for-4 performance with a home run in anther one-run win over the Broncs.

Crabtree then continued to swing a hot bat in helping the Lumberjacks sweep Texas State, going 5-for-12 in the three-game series. He added home runs in the first two games of the set, then scored a run and drove in the game-winner with a double for a 3-2 win in the finale.

Overall, he finished with a 1.048 slugging percentage for the week and is now only three doubles shy of tying Steven Hill's school record of 33 in a career.

Crabtree and the Lumberjacks will be back in action this weekend when they host UT-Arlington in a crucial three-game series. SFA currently is 1½ games back of Southeastern Louisiana for the final spot in the SLC Tournament, and is only 2½ games behind the Mavs for the seventh spot after UTA dropped a pair to Nicholls State over the weekend.
