Lumberjacks move up in polls after rout of rival

Sentinel Staff

Monday, October 26, 2009

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are becoming accustomed to making headlines with their accomplishments on the football field this season.

Just two days after ending a five-game losing streak to rival Sam Houston, 42-3, that put them at 3-0 in the Southland Conference, the Lumberjacks moved up in the national polls.

Despite being a little overlooked in the Division I-Football Championship Subdivision coaches' poll, SFA moved into the top of the FCS Now poll.

The Lumberjacks are in the Top 15 in three different national polls — No. 15 in the coaches' poll, No. 11 in the Sports Network poll and No. 10 in the FCS Now poll.

In the coaches' poll, the Lumberjacks (6-1) moved up three spots and received 328 voting points, but are still behind McNeese and Central Arkansas, teams that SFA defeated in back-to-back weeks.

In the Sports Network poll, SFA moved up four spots and 1,915 voting points. In the FCS Now poll, SFA also moved up four spots.

The Lumberjacks are still leading the nation in Division I-FCS in scoring at 44.4 points per contest, and they have the nation's No. 1 passing offense, with 2,522 yards through the air. The next closest team, Weber State, has thrown for 2,456 yards, but has played one more game than SFA.

While the offense has seemed to get most of the love, the SFA defense has also been solid, allowing 19.7 points per game, which ranks 32nd in the country. They are also 20th in the country in rushing yards allowed (677) and in the Top 30 in total yards allowed per game (294.3).

And with the team getting put in the national spotlight, some individuals have also put themselves on the national leaderboards.

With his five touchdown passes on Saturday, Jeremy Moses regained the nation's top spot for touchdown passes, with 25. He is also third in passing yard (2,227). He was recognized as one of five Division 1-FCS starts on the NCAA.com log, with his 372-yard, five-touchdown performance against Sam Houston.

And since Moses is putting up big numbers, it only makes sense that his receivers are ranked nationally, also.

Aaron Rhea (87.29) and Duane Brooks (87) are 18th and 19th, respectively, in receiving yards per game. Brooks is fifth in receptions per game (7.71).

Evan Engwall is third in scoring at 10.14 points per game. Rhea is 23rd with 7.71 points per game. Moses is second in points responsible for per game (21.43).

Devin Ducote is 27th in tackles per game (9.57).

Tim Knicky is the nation's sack leader with nine. Kenneth Charles is 24th with five. Knicky's 10 tackles for loss is tied for ninth.

Contrevious Parks is seventh in yards per punt return (16.33).

The Lumberjacks will hit the road against Texas State, which received votes in two polls, Saturday in San Marcos.
