Showdowns tonight in area action

Sentinel Staff

Friday, October 30, 2009

Two Class A showdowns highlight the area games tonight, when Cayuga meets Alto and Tenaha plays Mount Enterprise.

Fresh off a huge road win, Garrison plays Frankston in Frankston in hopes to keeping a firm grip on second place in District 19-AA.

To the games of the week.

Cayuga at Alto

Records: Alto is 8-1 overall and 5-0 in District 20-A. Cayuga is 6-1 and 4-0 in 20-A.

Last week: Alto defeated Cushing 40-0. Cayuga was idle.

Coaches: Alto's Keith Gardner. Cayuga's Tommy Allison.

Outlook: The big game of 20-A has arrived. Cayuga has strung together six straight wins since losing its opener to Frankston. Alto has won six straight games since losing to highly regarded Arp.

Bottom line: Two unbeatens in 20-A play battle for the district title in a highly anticipated game. Cayuga won this game last season, but Alto appears to be on even terms with the Wildcats and has the homefield edge this time around. Neither team has been challenged lately. We'll see which team excels under pressure in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.

Tenaha at Mount Enterprise

Records: Tenaha is 9-0 overall and 5-0 in District 19-A. Mount Enterprise is 7-1 and 3-1 in 19-A.

Last week: Mount Enterprise was idle. Tenaha defeated West Sabine 34-0.

Coaches: Tenaha's Terry Ward. Mount Enterprise's Louie Johnson.

Outlook: Tenaha tries to lock up a district title. Mount Enterprise needs a win to throw the district title race into a tizzy.

Bottom line: Tenaha has taken no prisoners since sneaking past Maud 12-6 in the season opener. Since then, it's been blowout after blowout. Since throwing a shoe against Joaquin, Mount Enterprise has scored 129 points. The Wildcats will need about 30 to stick with the Tigers tonight.

Garrison at Frankston

Records: Garrison is 6-1 overall and 2-1 in District 19-AA. Frankston is 4-4 and 1-2 in 19-AA.

Last week: Garrison defeated West Rusk 40-22. Arp defeated Frankston 55-0.

Coaches: Garrison's Craten Phillips. Frankston's Sam Wells.

Outlook: Garrison is aiming to solidify its hold on second place in the district. Frankston is running out of time in regard to a serious playoff push.

Bottom line: Garrison ran over West Rusk behind 356 rushing yards in a 40-22 road decision last week. A team that hasn't scored in two weeks, Frankston needs to find its offense in a hurry. Garrison's second leg of a two-game road trip may not be as challenging as the first. The Bulldogs are playing some good football with the playoffs just around the corner. Look out.

Cushing at Grapeland

Records: Cushing is 1-7 overall and 1-3 in District 20-A. Grapeland is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in 20-A.

Last week: Alto defeated Cushing 40-0. Grapeland defeated Cross Roads 41-13.

Coaches: Cushing's Glen Tunstall. Grapeland's Curt Faigle.

Outlook: With Grapeland and Carlisle on the schedule the next two weeks, Cushing's chance to challenge an opponent has arrived. After two early district losses, Grapeland has won two straight and is in playoff contention.

Bottom line: Grapeland has most of the advantages on the field. But the Sandies are not Cayuga and Alto — teams the Bearkats have played the last two weeks. Can Cushing challenge the Sandies? Maybe. Maybe not.

Kirbyville at San Augustine

Records: San Augustine is 0-8 and 0-3 in District 22-AA. Kirbyville is 6-2 and 3-0 in 22-AA.

Last week: Kirbyville defeated Woodville 49-7. Shelbyville defeated San Augustine 50-36.

Coaches: San Augustine's Bryan Clay. Kirbyville's Jack Alvarez.

Outlook: Kirbyville needs this game to set up a showdown for the district title with Newton next week. San Augustine may have missed its shot at winning a game this season by dropping last week's shoot-out to Shelbyville.

Bottom line: This looks like a mismatch. Kirbyville defeated Shelbyville 38-0 a few games back. San Augustine lost by 14 to Shelbyville.

Huntington at Center

Records: Center is 6-2 overall and 2-1 in District 18-AAA. Huntington is 1-7 and 0-3 in 18-AAA.

Last week: Diboll defeated Huntington 28-12. Center defeated Rusk 14-10.

Coaches: Center's Kevin Goodwin. Huntington's Todd Hopkins.

Outlook: Center's 14-10 win over Rusk has Kevin Goodwin's team in hot playoff contention. Huntington looks overmatched.

Bottom line: After needing two defensive scores to win last week against Rusk, Center needs to find its offense in this game. The Roughriders were held to 54 yards offense last week. The Roughriders should have plenty of opportunities to score in this one.
