On the eve of Halloween, there were no tricks or treats for the Nacogdoches Dragons.
A week after Lindale used deception to run for 244 yards on the Dragons' defense, Whitehouse just used conventional play-calling on its way to 566 total yards of offense in a 42-14 rout of Nacogdoches.
The loss, the Dragons' fourth in a row, officially made next week's home contest against Kilgore the final game of the season for Nacogdoches (3-6. 0-4).
The Dragons had no turnovers against Whitehouse, but were forced to punt seven times.
And in the first two and a half quarters, when Whitehouse had its first unit in the game, the Wildcats took advantage almost every time the Dragons booted the ball away.
Whitehouse quarterback Hunter Taylor was able to spread the ball to seven different receivers, as he threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns on 19-of-29 passing. The Whitehouse running game was also effective, as 10 different ball carries rushed for 206 yards on 27 carries.
The Dragons had 245 yards of total offense — 146 on the ground and 99 through the air. The offense looked pretty good in the first half, when Courtney Patton completed 6-of-10 passes for 69 yards. But he was 2-of-9 after the break for 30 yards.
After being limited to only one carry in the first half, D'Aundre Garrett rushed for 60 yards on seven carries in the second half. With the ability to use his speed to break big runs at any time, it's hard to understand why the senior running back isn't given the ball more. Every game, he seems to lead the Dragons in yards per carry. If he had the chance to run 20 times a game, he would be near the top of District 14-4A in rushing yards. Garrett finished with 61 yards on eight carries, while the rest of the Dragons rushed for 85 yards on 37 carries.
With only one game left on the schedule, the Dragons have two choices. They can mail it in and play for next season, or they can go out with a bang and spoil Kilgore's chances of making the playoffs.
It is not out of the question that the Dragons could pull off the upset next week. The key will be to take the mistake-free offense from Friday night and mix it with a solid defensive performance, and the Dragons' seniors will have a chance to end their high school careers with a victory.
Here is a look at the other games from 14-4A Friday night:
Jacksonville 28, Kilgore 10 — The Indians held the Bulldogs to 172 total yards and took a step closer to the district title.
Justin Jones rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown for Jacksonville.
Sophomore Ladarius Anthony rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a shoulder injury.
Lindale 42, Henderson 28 — Keandre Ross ran for three touchdowns to lead the Eagles to the win over the Lions.
Matt Broussard also accounted for three touchdowns for the Eagles.
Thomas Walker had two 63-yard touchdown runs for Henderson, and Tyrell Jenkins had a 66-yard scoring run.
Lindale is now tied with Jacksonville for first place in the district. The teams will scare off in the season finale to determine the champion.
Henderson, Whitehouse and Kilgore are tied for third place, with one team being left out of the playoffs.
