Hallsville eliminates Lady Dragons

KILGORE — The Hallsville Ladycats took turns closing out Nacogdoches on Tuesday night. Brianna Young came up big in Game 1, Kaci Jackson stepped up in Game 2 and Stephanie Bayne shut the door in Game 3 as Hallsville swept Nacogdoches 25-12, 25-10, 25-15 in a Class 4A Region II bi-district volleyball playoff at Bulldog Gymnasium.

Hallsville (33-7), which is ranked 23rd in this week's Texas Girls Coaches Association 4A poll, advances to the area round and faces No. 18 Hewitt Midway on Thursday at a time and site to be determined.

Hallsville used its trademark balanced attack to subdue Nacogdoches. Young had five kills apiece in Games 1 and 3 to finish with a match-high 11 kills and three blocks. Jackson had four kills in Game 2 en route to nine kills and two blocks. Bayne had five Game 5 kills to finish with eight.

"We don't have any one hitter where when we rotate her off the front row, we're dead in the water," said Hallsville head coach Cheryl Bell, speaking on the Ladycats' balance. "We've got five kids we think can at some point put the ball on the floor. It's been like that all year long. ... That's a good thing because no one can key on one player."

Hallsville dominated play at the net with a clear size advantage thanks to Young, Jackson and Darby Graff, who had five kills and an ace. Bell said winning Tuesday's match means the competition immediately gets stiffer for the duration of the postseason.

"The level of play is going to get much faster. The speed is going to definitely increase," Bell said. "We're going to have to make sure that we're ready to increase our speed. I think we block as well as anybody around here. The backcourt defense is going to make a big difference."

Chelsea Leeder led Nacogdoches with eight kills, one block and an ace. Charity Page added three kills.

Game 1

Hallsville jumped to a 6-2 lead, but Nacogdoches cut it to 11-9 behind three Leeder kills. The teams went back and forth with Hallsville leading 16-12 after a 3-1 Nacogdoches run, but the Ladycats closed the game on a 9-0 run as Young had two kills and a block down the stretch, while Graff and Bayne each added two kills.

Game 2

A 7-0 Hallsville lead left Game 2 in little doubt from the start. Morgan Peck had a kill and an ace to fuel the quick start. The Lady Dragons cut Hallsville's lead to four, 10-6, but Bayne served Hallsville to a 6-0 run, and Jackson had three kills and a block down the stretch as the Ladycats won 25-10.

Game 3

A Hallsville service error made the score 11-10 Ladycats, but Jackson had two kills and a block while Elizabeth Daily notched an ace in a 7-0 Hallsville run. Young had three kills down the stretch, and after a Hallsville net violation left the score 23-15, Daily set Bayne for consecutive kills to end the match.

Daily had 29 assists, while Bayne supplied all three game-ending kills.
