A lot on the line in 14-4A Friday night

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

The District 14-4A football race comes down to the final week.

When the lights come on Friday night, a district title will be decided, and all four playoff spots will be filled.

The big game will take place at the Tomato Bowl in Jacksonville, where the Indians host the Lindale Eagles.

The Indians and Eagles are both 3-1 in 14-4A and tied for the top spot. The winner of this contest will win the district title outright, and the loser will be awarded a playoff spot.

The other two spots are up for grabs between Henderson, Whitehouse and Kilgore.

For Kilgore, it's simple — win and get in. The winner of the Whitehouse and Henderson game will also be guaranteed a spot. But it will be interesting if Kilgore loses.

If Kilgore falls to Nacogdoches and Henderson defeats Whitehouse, Kilgore will advance over Whitehouse. If Kilgore falls to Nacogdoches and Whitehouse defeats Henderson, Henderson will advance over Kilgore.

There will be plenty of scoreboard-watching Friday. The easiest scenario for teams is to just win, baby.

Here is a look at the three games Friday night.

Lindale (5-4, 3-1) at Jacksonville (7-2, 3-1): Before the season, these two teams were predicted to finish in the bottom half of 14-4A.

Now, they are facing off for the district title.

A few weeks after the season began, I expected Jacksonville to have this opportunity, but I have to admit that I am still shocked at Lindale's success.

Both teams are riding three-game winning streaks.

The Indians are coming off a 28-10 victory against Kilgore, behind 105 yards on eight carries from Justin Jones. He also had nine tackles for Jacksonville.

The Eagles pulled off what many viewed as an upset last week, a 42-28 win over Henderson. Keandre Ross and Matt Broussard each had three touchdowns for Lindale.

Jacksonville has to be the favorite, but with Ross and Broussard on the other side, Lindale definitely can't be counted out.

Whitehouse (2-7, 2-2) at Henderson (5-4, 2-2): The loser of this game still has a slim chance of reaching the playoffs, but both squads are going to do their best to avoid that situation.

Whitehouse cruised to a 42-14 win over Nacogdoches last week. The Wildcats had 566 yards of total offense.

The Wildcats have several playmakers, most notably Trey Metoyer, Chad Lewis and Quincy Aldridge.

Henderson is going to have to shore up its defense, after allowing 98 points in the last two games. The Lions have showed they can score, with three touchdown runs of more than 60 yards against Lindale, but the key will be limiting Whitehouse's high-powered offense.

Whitehouse has also struggled on defense this season.

If there were over/under lines in high school, this is a game that would likely play over the total.

Kilgore (4-5, 2-2) at Nacogdoches (3-6, 0-4): The Bulldogs are fighting for a playoff spot, and the Dragons are also playing for something.

Nacogdoches has a chance to be the spoiler, as well as avoid a winless district campaign.

While the Dragons' hopes of reaching the playoffs were officially ended last week, they still have one more game to play. And with it being "Senior Night," the Dragons have a chance to send their seniors out on a positive note.

A sophomore from Kilgore will try to stop that from happening. Running back Ladarius Anthony, who left the Bulldogs' last game with a shoulder injury, has torched opposing defenses all season.

Anthony has rushed for 1,231 yards and 21 touchdowns on 166 carries. The Nacogdoches defense has shown the ability to allow big plays and a lot of yardage this season. If Anthony is healthy, he could be in store for a huge game.
