A call from a suspect identifying himself as an employee of the sheriff’s department and telling victims they have missed a court date is a scam, Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges says.

Two such calls had been reported on Tuesday, with the caller identifying himself as Sgt. Roy Mobley of the sheriff’s office.

“We do have an employee by that name that the scammer is using,” Bridges said in a statement released Tuesday. “The real Roy Mobley who is a Captain with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office is not affiliated in any way with the person who is making these phone calls.”

Bridges emphasized that law enforcement will never demand money over the phone.

“Law Enforcement is not a collection agency,” Bridges continued. “If you receive any type of call of this nature, no matter how convincing it may be, I can assure you that it is a scam.”

Bridges urged anyone receiving calls of this type to report it to law enforcement.
