Delays caused by road work on Loop 224 will continue through next week, the Texas Department of Transportation announced.
At the U.S. 59 South and at Highway 21 East overpasses, traffic will be detoured around entry and exit ramps. Work will include “repairs to concrete beams at these locations that have been damaged due to the normal wear and tear caused by oversized or overweight permitted loads,” TxDOT Lufkin District spokesperson Rhonda Oaks said. “The work is fairly routine and will extend the life of the bridges.”
Repairs are expected to be complete by July 16, weather permitting.
Meanwhile, TxDOT officials say they remain hopeful that an inconvenient intersection closure at E Austin and Raguet streets will be over by the time Nacogdoches ISD classes begin on Aug. 26. Two adjacent elementary campuses lie just to the south on Raguet street, and even partially closed, East Austin is a vital artery for school traffic.
The intersection closed right after schools dismissed for the summer so that storm sewer and water lines could be installed underground. Due to an ongoing widening project begun in January by TxDOT, East Austin Street will remain closed to through traffic until mid-2020.
