An August rezoning of a lot on Logansport Street continues to add fuel to the City of Nacogdoches’ only contested council race.

In the May 1 election, Northeast Ward incumbent Garth Hinze will face challenger Kathleen Belanger, who is among a group of Logansport Street residents trying, thus far unsuccessfully, to get the city to reconsider an Aug. 18 rezoning of a lot on their street from single family to high-density multifamily use.

The opening of any ar for high-density multifamily units can destroy any area and become a blight on the city. An example of this is in Houston, Texas where there is no zoning The Greenspoint Mall located near the family units was forced to close because of the escalating crime. The cheap multifamily units brought in all kinds of undesirables loaded with criminals. Now that mall is closed not before the area had the dubious name of" Gunpoint Mall". With to possibility of growth, this city must be very careful not to open whole communities for undesirables residents that can be a blight o the whole city.
