Pecan specialist highlights Reeves series

SFA Gardens hosts the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series this Thursday featuring pecan specialist Dr. George Ray McEachern, part-time horticulture professor.

The 7 p.m. presentation will be held in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

McEachern holds a doctoral degree in horticulture from Texas A&M University and served as an extension pecan specialist at the university from 1969 to 2001.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is held the second Thursday of each month and includes a rare plant raffle after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public but donations to the series fund are appreciated.

Valentine gala set Thursday

The fifth annual Valentine Scholarship Gala hosted by Concerned Black Men of Nacogdoches is 6:30 p.m. Thursday in SFA’s Grand Ballroom.

Proceeds go toward scholarships and youth programs. Tickets for the gala are $35 or $300 for a table of eight bronze sponsorship. Silver, Gold and Platinum sponsorships are also available.
