I don’t remember the name of the 1954 graduation at Woden High School but I remember the subject: “world hot spots.” One of the “biggies” was Vietnam. To me, Vietnam might as well have been on Mars.

A decade later, 1964-65 and 1967-68, I was an Army pilot, fighting the communists from the Mekong Delta to the border with North Vietnam. I carried thousands of tons of artillery pieces, bullets, beans and body bags to frontline positions and carried countless wounded or dead Vietnamese and Americans off the battlefield.
