Etoile ISD this week took the bold step of requiring masks on campus in an effort to better protect students and staff from the spread of COVID-19.

We applaud EISD board members for rejecting Gov. Greg Abbott’s edict barring masks mandates and joining with other Deep East Texas schools including Lufkin and Diboll who are committed to protecting our community.

Thankful Texan

I agree that the Etoile school board (& others, too) should be free to decide what is best for their district but I have looked high and low for the “credible science” referenced in the editorial and I find none. It sure seems like masks should make some difference but I don’t find any studies supporting that belief. I find a 2020 CDC article that found “no significant effects of face masks” and articles like https://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2021/08/23/masking-in-schools-n2594490 and https://thefederalist.com/2021/08/18/why-forcing-unvaccinated-students-to-wear-cloth-masks-is-anti-science/ that are well supported. The last thing I want is to start an argument but I sincerely welcome any cites to evidence beyond the CDC recommendations, which are not themselves evidence.
