Even with the challenges of COVID-19, Love In the Name of Christ has continued to serve those in need. Because of the generosity of the Nacogdoches community, we have helped nearly 850 of the more than 1,275 applications that have been submitted this year.

In addition to COVID-19 Rental and Utility assistance, we have received applications for various services from appliances, bibles, clothing, food, furniture, shared blessings, home repairs, prayer, to transportation, utilities, wheelchair ramps and yard work.

COVID-19 aid represents 198 of those total requests, representing 128 different families. Most of the families requested rental or utility assistance only one time, and have returned to work and self-sufficiency. Many of these families had not asked for assistance of any kind before, and they were introduced to Love In the Name of Christ for the first time.

This opened a new mission field opportunity for Love INC. In addition to helping them with case management, food, encouragement, prayer, rental and utility assistance, we have invited them to Back to School, to help provide a Thanksgiving for them if needed, and for those with children age newborn to 12, we will invite them to our Christmas Shared Blessings event.

We are winding down the COVID-19 assistance program, as we have spent almost all of the funding received for this program. We are still accepting applications for employees whose wages were reduced or eliminated after March due to COVID-19. Applications are available on our website at, and will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Again, the program is winding down and assistance is limited at this time.

When we take a look at our numbers and requests from a year ago, we see quite a few differences. Our office was closed from late March to early June of this year, resulting in fewer overall regular applications, furniture requests, home visits and fewer clothing requests.

However, because the staff worked remotely and was available to answer calls while the office was closed, and because we modified our application so that anyone can submit an application online, we were still able to serve some of the requests from March to June. When we added the category of COVID-19 assistance, we met a whole new group of clients as we mentioned above.

Now the office is open, the warehouse ministry is active, our teams are making home visits and we are planning to help with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Considering everything, we have about 400 fewer total applications than this time last year, but we expect to finish the last quarter with a large response to our Christmas Shared Blessings event.

Applications will be available by Nov. 1 online for anyone living in Nacogdoches County, needing Christmas gifts for children ages newborn to 12 years of age and who have those children living with them in their home. We appreciate your support and donations for our various ministries. We will stay in touch with our churches, our volunteers and the community with news of how God asks us to adapt to the challenges and opportunities that come our way.

In closing, we want to thank the community for their gifts to our two expectant mothers. We have everything we need. Drive-by baby showers are planned for later this week. We will give you an update and report soon.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
