It was a strong weekend for Nacogdoches area baseball teams, as Garrison and Central Heights swept their respective Class 2A Region III Area series’, while the Alto Yellowjackets battled back to win the final two games of their three-game series to advance to the 2A Regional Quarterfinals.
Garrison will take on cross-county rival Cushing Bearkats in a one-game winner-take-all in the regional quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nacogdoches High School. Alto will battle Centerville in a best-of-three series with Game 1 starting at 6 p.m. Thursday in Madisonville. Game 2 will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rusk High School, with game three to follow, if needed.
Central Heights will play a three-game series against Woodville with Game 1 taking place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Nacogdoches High School. Game 2 will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jasper High School, with game three to follow, if needed.
Central Heights 5, Tarkington 0 (Fri., Gm 1) — A combined shutout from Cole Brady and Jackson Mills powered the No. 10-ranked Central Heights Blue Devils to a 5-0 win over Tarkington in the first game of a best-of-three area round series.
Brady threw six innings, allowed one hit, walked five and fanned 10 batters. Mills pitched one inning in relief and allowed two hits.
Ashton Wagner and Jax Perry contributed two hits apiece to lead the team, and Wagner also added an RBI to his tally. Other offensive contributors included: Cade York (one run, one RBI), Jackson Glymph (one hit, one RBI), Michael Perry (one hit, one RBI), Luke Taylor (one RBI), Kade Godfrey (one run, one hit) and Mitchell Ashley (one run).
Central Heights 10, Tarkington 1 (Sat., Gm 2) — The Blue Devils capped off the series with an offensive onslaught, defeating Tarkington, 10-1, in the second game of the 3A Region III Area Round.
Michael Perry led the team with a 3-for-4 outing and a tie for the team-high in RBIs with two. Other offensive contributors included: Jax Perry (two hits, one run), Mitchell Ashley (one hit, one RBI), Cade York (one hit, two runs), Jackson Glymph (one run), Luke Taylor (two hits, two RBIs), Kade Godfrey (one RBI), Cole Brady (one hit, one RBI), Ashton Wagner (one RBI) and Bryce Payne (one run).
Justin Bradford got the start for the Blue Devils and threw six innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out four batters. Payne threw an inning in relief and struck out one batter and walked one.
Alto 11, Gary 1 (Sat., Gm 2) — After dropping the first game of the series on Thursday, the No. 17-ranked Alto Yellowjackets unleashed 11 runs in game two over the Gary Bobcats, 11-1, to tie the area series at a game apiece.
Carter Pursley went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Matthew Randall collected two hits and also drove in three runs of his own. Other offensive contributors included: Johnny Soto (one hit, one RBI), Logan Rogers (two hits, three runs), Cody Watson (one RBI), Isaack Weatherford (one hit, one RBI), Alejandro Gomez (one run), Isaac Carter (one run) and Jackson Duplichain (one hit, one run).
Randall threw five innings and allowed one run (no earned runs), four hits and struck out eight batters. Isaac Carter threw an inning in relief and allowed no runs and no hits.
Alto 14, Gary 7 (Sat., Gm 3) — A seven-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth inning propelled Alto past Gary, 14-7, and secured Alto’s spot in the 2A Region III Quarterfinals.
Matthew Randall continued swinging a hot bat he had in Game 2 with a 3-for-5 outing in Game 3 with four RBIs. Isaack Weatherford ended his night with a 2-for-4 showing and four RBIs. Other offensive contributors included: Johnny Soto (one hit, three RBIs), Logan Rogers (three hits, two RBIs), Carter Pursley (three hits, one RBI), Cody Watson (two runs), Isaac Carter (one run), Jackson Duplichain (one RBI), Tooter Bolton (one run) and Alejandro Gomez (one run).
Pursley started game three and went 5.2 innings, allowed five runs (one earned run), five hits, walked six batters and fanned one. Carter finished the sixth inning with 0.1 innings pitched and allowed two runs on two hits and walked one batter. Randall threw an inning in relief and struck out two batters.
Garrison 4, Leon 0 (Sat., Gm 2) — For the fourth-straight playoff game, the No. 3-ranked Garrison Bulldogs’ pitching held their opponents scoreless, leading to a 4-0 win over Leon-Jewett to advance to the 2A Region III Quarterfinals. SFA signee Dayton Dewberry threw all seven innings and allowed two hits and struck out 15 batters.
Tristan Adkison led the Bulldogs with two hits, while Britt King, Freddy Christopher, Tyler Spivey and Regan Todd added a hit and an RBI each. Dewberry and Tryton Kruse each added a hit to their tally.
