Garrison Bulldog Baseball

Garrison head baseball coach Dempsey Compton gives direction to outfielder Freddy Christopher during a recent home game for the Bulldogs. No. 3-ranked Garrison will open a best-of-three series on Friday in Shelbyville with a pair of games against Brookeland, starting at 6 p.m.

The wait is almost over.

After a wait of nearly two years because of COVID-19, seven area teams — Nacogdoches, Central Heights, Garrison, Woden, Alto, Douglass and Cushing — will have their chance to compete in the UIL baseball playoffs and hope to etch their name in the history books beginning Thursday.

In softball action, of the seven local teams that competed in bi-district rounds this weekend, only two — Chireno and Woden — advanced to the next round.

Here’s a look at the upcoming action:

BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

Nacogdoches (16-5A/3rd) — The Dragons ended regular season with two-straight losses to bitter rival Lufkin Panthers and a 4-3 setback to non-district opponent No.3 (Class 4A) Bullard on Monday. As the third seed in District 16-5A, they will take on nearby opponent Longview Lobos (2nd/15-5A) with a best-of-three series beginning Friday.

The home-and-home series will begin at Longview at 7 p.m. Friday. Game two will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dragon Field in Nacogdoches. Game three will start 30 minutes after game two, if necessary.

Central Heights (21-3A/1st) — No.10-ranked Central Heights is coming off of their 12th-straight district-winning campaign, and will look to carry that momentum into a three-game matchup against Kirbyville (4th/22-3A).

Garrison (23-2A, 1st) — The No.3-ranked Garrison Bulldogs did something that no other previous Garrison team has ever done before: go undefeated in district play. The Bulldogs will look to maintain that momentum with a matchup against Brookeland (4th/24-2A).

Game one will take place at 6 p.m. Friday at Shelbyville High School. Game two will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. If needed, game three will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shelbyville High School.

Alto (22-2A, 1st) — The Alto Yellowjackets came out on top of a highly competitive District 22-2A. Now, they will look to ride that momentum into a matchup with Normangee (3rd/21-2A).

Game one will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Madisonville Athletic Complex, and game two will take place 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. If needed, game three will be Saturday at 12 p.m. at Rusk High School.

Douglass (22-2A, 2nd) — The Douglass Indians capped off their regular season with a walk-off win over cross-county rival Cushing Bearkats. With over a week to prepare, they will take on Leon-Jewitt (3rd/21-2A) in a three-game series.

Game one will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Douglass. Game two will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in either Leon or Madisonville. Game three, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

Cushing (22-2A, 3rd) — Cushing ended its regular season on a high note after a 10-run win over Groveton on Monday. The ‘Kats will take on Lovelady (21-2A) in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday.

Game one will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in Cushing. Game two will be at 5 p.m. Friday in Lovelady, and game three will be 30 minutes following game two, if necessary.

SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS
