The UIL has adjusted both the boys and girls playoff schedule, with the girls state championships set for March 10-11 and the boys taking place March 12-13. Both championships will be played in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced Friday that it is adjusting the dates for both the boys and girls playoffs and the girls state tournament because of delays to both playoffs due to the severe winter weather in Texas this past week.

According to information released, both state championships rounds will still be played in the Alamodome in San Antonio. However the girls state title rounds will now be played on Wednesday and Thursday, March 10-11, while the boys state title games will still be played on Friday and Saturday, March 12-13.

Numerous games across the state — including East Texas — have been delayed this week and this has caused the UIL to change some of its deadlines for completing rounds.

In boys action, teams are now allowed to go into next week to complete their bi-district rounds (originally scheduled to be completed Saturday), as the UIL has extended the deadline until Tuesday. Area rounds must be played on Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 24-25), with quarterfinals being played next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 26-27). That will mean that many boys squads will be playing three games this upcoming week if they continue to win.

There will be no regional tournaments his year because of the COVID-19 pandemic changes by the UIL. The dates for the various regional semifinals will be played on March 1-2, with the regional finals set for March 5-6 and the state semifinals being played on March 8-9, all at neutral sites.

None of the schools in the Nacogdoches area have begun their playoffs as of yet. As of Friday at 12-noon, there are a number of games scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 20), with some being changed again to early in the week.

Pending any last-minute delays because of further weather condition problems, Timpson will host a boys game on Saturday, when Tenaha takes on Broaddus at 11 a.m.

Cushing will be hosting a boys bi-district game between Timpson and West Sabine at 2 p.m., before an Area round girls playoff. Woden’s Lady Eagles will square off against No. 18 Timpson at 4 p.m.

In other boys’ bi-district round playoffs on Saturday, No. 21 Cushing will face Beckville at Tenaha HS at 2:30 p.m. and Central Heights will tangle with Newton at Panther Gym at the Lufkin MS at 5 p.m. The Gary/Colmesneil bi-district game has yet to be set as of early Friday, but was tentatively set for Saturday at a site and time to be announced.

On Monday, No. 18 Douglass will now take on Hawkins at New Summerfield at 7 p.m. in a contest moved from Saturday. Lufkin will tangle with Mount Pleasant at Hallsville HS at 6 p.m. in a bi-district matchup.

Tuesday’s games involving local squads includes Naogdoches squaring off against Longview at Tenaha HS at 6 p.m. and No. 10-ranked Garrison will battle Carlisle at Rusk HS at 6:30 p.m. The Woden Eagles have moved their bi-district game with Union Grove to Tuesday, but as of Friday afternoon no site or time has been decided upon.

Most Texas High School girls teams have played their respective bi-district rounds, however there are some that have not. Other schools across the state have moved on to the third round, making the situation difficult for all involved.

The UIL has put a deadline of Saturday (Feb. 20) for completing the bi-district round, while extending the Area round deadline to Saturday through Tuesday (Feb. 20-23).

The regional quarterfinals are set to be completed on Feb. 26-27, with the regional finals scheduled for March 1-2. The state semifinals are scheduled to be played on March 5-6.

There are only a few teams left in the Nacogdoches area that remain alive in the girls playoffs. In two games played on Saturday (Feb. 20) at Cushing High School’s Denney-Sides Coliseum, Woden will battle No. 18 Timpson in a 2A Area matchup at 4 p.m.

In another Area game in Class 2A, the contest between No. 4 Douglass vs No. 11 Tenaha to Tuesday at Cushing HS and tip off at 6 p.m.

In Class 1A, No. 6 Chireno is waiting for the bi-district game between Jonesboro and Milford to be played so the Lady Owls can take on the survivor. Broaddus is scheduled to play Union Grove, but the site and time has yet to be anounced.

San Augustine will meet Hawkins at New Summerfield on Monday at 5 p.m., just prior to the Douglass-Hawkins boys bi-district playoff.

Also on Monday, Lufkin will take on Highland Park at Athens HS at 6:30 p.m. (or 5 p.m. if there is a doubleheader scheduled) in a Class 5A second-round game.
