HUNTSVILLE — The SFA volleyball team could not get its offense humming with its usual efficiency on Friday night and fell to rival Sam Houston in straight sets, 23-25, 19-25, 19-25.
With the setback, the Ladyjacks (12-4) drop back into a second-place tie with UT-Rio Grande Valley (11-6) in the Western Athletic Conference’s Southwest Division, as each squad is 3-1 in league action and one-half game behind the Bearkats. Sam Houston (10-5) is the only unbeaten team in the conference race with a spotless 3-0 record.
Abilene Christian (7-8) and Tarleton (8-10) are both 1-3 against league foes, while Lamar (4-13) sits in last place with an 0-3 conference record.
SFA hit just .092 for the match and struggled with errors to drop its first match in WAC play.
Sam 25, SFA 23 (Set 1) — SHSU got off to a quick start in the opening set, taking a 3-0 lead. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth for most of the set and it was the ‘Jacks who held a key lead late in the set, as Payton Cerny hammered home a kill to go ahead 23-21. The Bearkats would rattle off four straight points from there to steal the set, 25-23.
Sam 25, SFA 19 (Set 2) — SFA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening of set two, only to yield a six-point run to the Bearkats to fall behind in the frame. SHSU would hold the lead the rest of the way, and despite a Kodia Garcia kill that pulled SFA within two at 21-19, the Bearkats once again closed out the set on a run, winning four quick points to polish off set two, 25-19.
Sam 25, SFA 19 (Set 3) — After trading leads back and forth in set three, SHSU used a 5-1 run to open up a 16-12 lead, which they would hold the rest of the way. SFA pulled within four at 23-19 on a kill by Valeria Rosado, but yielded two more points to Sam Houston to finish the set 25-19 and the match, 3-0.
LADYJACK NOTABLES: Kennedy Wright had eight kills to lead the ‘Jacks, while Rosado added seven. Maddy Borque dished out 15 assists and Garcia had 12.
Bryli Contreras posted 17 digs, while Rosado had 12.
